Square Alternatives for Restaurants, by Reason for Leaving

Most "Square alternatives" lists rank ten systems by features, as if everyone leaves Square for the same reason. A café that's growing past $30,000 a month in cards has a different problem from a dining room that needs coursing, or a group opening its third location. This page starts from the number on Square's own pricing pages that creates each problem, then shows which alternatives answer it, using only prices those companies publish on their own sites.
We could read published US pricing for Square, Toast, SpotOn, Lightspeed Restaurant and TouchBistro. Clover's pricing pages blocked our automated check on 4 November 2026, so Clover appears below without numbers; our Square vs Clover 36-month cost comparison has the figures read in a browser.
The Square numbers that push restaurants to look
| Reason you're looking | The Square number behind it | Alternatives that answer it |
|---|---|---|
| Card fees at higher volume | 2.6% + 15¢ (Free), 2.5% + 15¢ (Plus), 2.4% + 15¢ (Premium); custom pricing only "if you process over $250,000 per year" | SpotOn Essentials (2.45% + 15¢ published); quoted rates from Toast, Lightspeed Essential and Premium, TouchBistro |
| Full-service tables and kitchen screens | KDS $30 per device a month on Plus, $20 on Premium; not available on Free. Coursing and seat management listed as a Premium feature at $149 a month | TouchBistro from $69 a month with tableside ordering and floor plans included; Lightspeed KDS at $30 per screen a month; SpotOn Essentials with table layouts |
| More than one location | $49 (Plus) or $149 (Premium) a month for each location | Lightspeed multi-location management and Enterprise; SpotOn Build Your Own; Toast Build Your Own (its published prices are single-location) |
| Someone to install and train on site | Onboarding and implementation support named only for Square Pro | Toast lists installation and network configuration; SpotOn's implementation covers menu build, installation and training |
| Choosing your own card processor | Square processes its own payments | TouchBistro says it is compatible with "a wide range of payment processing solutions" |
Reason 1: card fees at higher volume
This is where the published numbers are closest together. Square Plus charges 2.5% + 15¢ for tap, dip or swipe. Of the alternatives we checked, only SpotOn publishes a lower card-present rate for restaurants: on its Essentials plan, $55 per station a month, 2.45% + $0.15, "except Amex: 3.19% + $0.15". Toast, Lightspeed (on Essential and Premium) and TouchBistro quote the rate per restaurant.
The catch is how each one charges for software. Square's plan fee is per location; SpotOn's is per station. The table below adds card fees and monthly software for in-person payments at a $40 average ticket, Visa and Mastercard only, hardware not included.
| Monthly card sales | Square Free | Square Plus | Square Premium | SpotOn Essentials, 1 station | SpotOn Essentials, 2 stations | SpotOn Essentials, 3 stations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20,000 | $595 | $624 | $704 | $620 | $675 | $730 |
| $40,000 | $1,190 | $1,199 | $1,259 | $1,185 | $1,240 | $1,295 |
| $80,000 | $2,380 | $2,349 | $2,369 | $2,315 | $2,370 | $2,425 |
| $150,000 | $4,463 | $4,362 | $4,312 | $4,293 | $4,348 | $4,403 |
Chart of the table above.
How the $40,000 row works for Square Plus: 2.5% × $40,000 + 15¢ × 1,000 payments + $49 = $1,000 + $150 + $49 = $1,199, an effective rate of about 3.0%. SpotOn with one station: 2.45% × $40,000 + 15¢ × 1,000 + $55 = $1,185.
The volume where it starts to matter
SpotOn's rate is 0.05 points lower, so it saves $5 per $10,000 of card sales. Against Square Plus, that covers SpotOn's higher software fee at:
- 1 station ($6 a month more than Square Plus): about $12,000 a month in card sales.
- 2 stations ($61 more): about $122,000 a month.
- 3 stations ($116 more): about $232,000 a month.
American Express changes the picture. At SpotOn's 3.19% Amex rate, if Amex is more than about 6.8% of your card sales, SpotOn's blended card-present rate is higher than Square Plus's flat 2.5%. Look at your card mix in your Square reports before you count on the saving.
Within Square, the same arithmetic says Square Plus costs less than Free above about $49,000 a month in card sales, and Premium less than Plus above about $100,000, before counting any features.
The bigger lever is a negotiated rate. Square's own line is $250,000 a year, about $20,800 a month: above it, Square invites you to ask about custom pricing. Every 0.1 point off your rate is worth $240 a year at $20,000 a month in card sales, $480 at $40,000, $960 at $80,000 and $1,800 at $150,000. So once you're past Square's line, get a written custom quote from Square and from one or two quoted-rate systems, and compare the effective rate, not the headline. Our sister site's effective rate calculator does the sum.
If the real problem is upfront hardware
Some owners leave Square because a Register costs $899 up front (or $44 a month over 24 months). SpotOn's All-In plan is $0 per station with hardware included, at 2.79% + $0.20 card-present, with "Processing minimums apply, 2yr minimum term". Over 24 months at $40,000 a month and a $40 ticket, All-In card fees come to $31,584; Square Plus plus a Register bought outright comes to $29,675. The difference, $1,909, is what you pay for not buying hardware, and you sign a two-year term to get it. Toast's Starter Kit, from $0 a month with no upfront hardware cost, quotes its rate, so get it in writing and run the same sum.

Reason 2: full-service tables and kitchen screens
Square runs table service, but the kitchen and coursing tools sit on paid tiers. Square's restaurant pricing lists the KDS app as "Not available in Square Free", $30 a month per device on Plus and $20 on Premium, and lists coursing and seat management among Premium's top features at $149 a month per location.
Here is monthly software for one location with two kitchen screens, from each company's published prices:
| System | Software per month | Kitchen screens (2) | Published total per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square Plus | $49 | $60 | $109 |
| Square Premium | $149 | $40 | $189 |
| Lightspeed Restaurant Starter | 69 USD | $60 | 129 USD |
| TouchBistro Point of Sale | from $69 | Add-on, quoted | $69 plus KDS quote |
| Toast Point of Sale | from $69 | Not priced on the pricing page | $69 plus quote |
Square is the cheapest published option in this table. The alternatives earn their place on workflow, not price. TouchBistro says its $69 starting price includes "Tableside Ordering, Floor Plan & Table Management, Menu Management, Staff Management, and Reporting & Analytics – no features are locked or off-limits". Lightspeed's pricing table lists floor plans, Lightspeed Tempo for service pacing and pre-auth bar mode; check which of its plans includes each, because the page shows them by plan. Lightspeed's page shows its plan prices as 69, 189 and 399 USD without a billing period beside them, so ask whether that's billed monthly or annually. Toast's pricing table lists table and order management. SpotOn Essentials lists table layouts.
If you're a full-service room, the honest test is a dinner rush in a demo: split a six-top by seat, fire a second course, move a table. Price that only after the workflow passes.
Reason 3: a second or third location
Square says that on Plus and Premium "the monthly fee applies to each location you run". Three locations on Plus is $147 a month; on Premium, $447, before kitchen screens. That's modest, and it isn't usually why groups move. They move for central menu control, reporting across sites and someone to call who knows the account.
Those alternatives price multi-location work by quote. Toast's published prices carry the footnote "Pricing applies to new customers and single locations only", and its product list includes multilocation management. SpotOn's Build Your Own plan is "For multi-unit, enterprise, and other high-volume operations" at custom pricing. Lightspeed lists multi-location management and an Enterprise plan with a "Dedicated support team and customer success manager". Square has its own answer here too: Square Pro, with custom pricing plus "account management" for sellers over $250,000 a year. Ask all of them for the same three-location quote.
Reason 4: someone to set it up on site
Square is built to be set up yourself: hardware ships from $59, and its pricing page names "onboarding and implementation support" as part of Square Pro. If you want a person to build the menu, wire the printers and train staff, the alternatives say more about it:
- Toast lists "Installation and network configuration" in its pricing table, and says upfront costs are "hardware and implementation".
- SpotOn says implementation costs "go toward your custom menu build, installation, and personalized training". Its pricing page lists hardware prices but not the implementation price, so ask for it.
- Lightspeed Enterprise includes "Unlimited launch and consultation services".
- TouchBistro offers hardware financing "for venues with two or more terminals".
A vendor's install team is not the same as a local reseller. Ask who installs, whether they're local, and who answers the phone on a Friday night.
Reason 5: choosing your own processor, and keeping no term
Square processes its own payments, so leaving Square's processing means leaving Square POS. Most alternatives work the same way. Toast describes itself as "a payment facilitator that partners with processors". SpotOn "provides integrated payments for all of our POS offerings". Lightspeed's table lists integrated payments as "Default" on Starter and "Custom" on Essential and Premium. The exception among the ones we checked is TouchBistro, which says it is "compatible with a wide range of payment processing solutions", either "an integrated processor or a standalone system".
Before you switch, check that you're not trading away something Square already gives you. Square Plus and Premium have a free 30-day trial and "you can cancel or switch plans anytime", and Square's fee page lists no fee for early termination. Among the alternatives:
- SpotOn Essentials is described as "month-to-month flexibility"; SpotOn All-In has a two-year minimum term.
- Toast's merchant agreement renews "for successive one (1) year periods" after the initial term, and leaving early costs the remaining software fees, or $150 a month remaining on Pay-as-you-go. Our Toast vs Square cost to switch walks through it.
Ask every seller for the term, renewal and early termination terms in writing, next to the rate.
Which one fits
- Stay on Square if you're under about $20,800 a month in card sales (Square's $250,000-a-year line), you run a counter-service café or quick-service spot, you have one or two locations, or you value published prices and no term. On the numbers above, Square Plus is within $15 a month of SpotOn's one-station plan up to $40,000 a month, and the cheapest published option with two kitchen screens. If you're above the line, ask Square for a Square Pro quote before you leave.
- Choose SpotOn Essentials if you run one station, take little American Express, want a published rate a little under Square Plus, and want month-to-month terms and a paid implementation that covers menu build, installation and training.
- Choose TouchBistro if you're a full-service restaurant that wants every POS feature in the base price and wants to keep, or shop for, your own card processor.
- Choose Lightspeed Restaurant if service pacing, bar tabs and multi-location reporting matter and you want kitchen screens priced openly; get the payments quote for Essential or Premium.
- Choose Toast if you want a restaurant-only system on dedicated hardware with installation, and you're comfortable with a term; get the card rate and the order's term in writing first.
- Consider Clover if a lower in-person rate in a hardware bundle appeals; read our Square vs Clover comparison for the break-even.
